James Wan made waves in 2018 with the release of
Aquaman
, the aquatic hero’s first live-action solo film. While Wan was an unconventional choice to helm the DC blockbuster, given the director’s horror-filled film credits such as
Insidious
and
The Conjuring
,
Aquaman
proved to be both a critical and box office success.
Even though James Wan mostly channeled his eye for action in
Aquaman
, he was not afraid to bring some sequences of horror to the superhero film as well. Now, the director has revealed that the in-development
Aquaman 2
will consist of even more frightening moments.

In preparation for DC’s upcoming virtual comic-con event, DC FanDome, James Wan answered a fan question from Twitter that asked
“The trench scene was my favorite scene from
Aquaman
. Can we expect more such horror touches in
Aquaman 2
?”
James Wan’s answer was given as a voice recording on
DC’s Twitter
account, as he stated:
“Just like the first movie had a touch of my horror sensibility in it in regards to the Trench sequence, I would say, there will be a little bit of that in the next one… I think it’s something that’s a big part of who I am.”

WHAT THIS MEANS
James Wan is an incredibly prolific horror director, so it does not come as much surprise that Wan would opt for including horror sequences in his sequel to
Aquaman
. As Wan said, the underwater world is an almost endless realm of undiscovered and terrifying creatures, locations, and threats, and approaching all of that through a horror lens would tailor to all of James Wan’s talents.
Wan had already planned on capitalizing off of the horrors of the deep when it was announced that he would be producing an
Aquaman
horror spin-off
The Trench
, set in the terrifying world of the trench creatures that Aquaman faced in the film. A release date has not yet been announced, but the production team is
still actively working
on the film.

Not much has been revealed about where
Aquaman 2
will be exploring next, but at least Wan’s response gives an idea of the tones that will be explored. Wan’s unique ability to balance character, action, and horror has put him in the position he is today, and now fans can look forward to the same mixture of genres in Arthur Curry’s next underwater adventure.
