When HBO Max announced that Zack Snyder’s original vision would be releasing on the new streaming platform,
long-campaigning fans had a win on their hands
.
Snyder had to step away from his role as director on
Justice League
mid-way through production due to personal reasons. Warner Bros. then brought on
The Avengers
director Joss Whedon to finish the film, but what was released apparently became a drastically different version to what Snyder had intended. Many have since supported a release of Snyder’s original cut,
including cast members
, fans and it seems, other directors.

In an interview with
Comic Book Movie
, one half of the
Avengers: Endgame
directing duo, Joe Russo, discussed his thoughts on the upcoming Snyder cut, saying: "
I think it’s always great when a director’s original vision can find its way to the screen."
Russo also commented on the experience he had working as a director for Marvel:
“We have been very, very fortunate in our careers that everything we did for Marvel, we would call our director’s cuts. They were very gracious and deferential, and very supportive of our vision for those movies, and there’s nothing sitting on the editing room floor that we suddenly want back into those films. We worked very hard at what the current cut of those movies are, so we’re very fortunate to have released our director’s cut on all four of those films.”

Having helmed four superhero blockbusters of his own,
Russo speaks from experience on the subject
. Marvel Studios placed a lot of trust in the Russo Brothers to stick to their vision for the double-feature ending of the Avengers in Phase Three. But considering
Avengers: Endgame
went on to become the highest grossing film of all time, Marvel’s faith in the Russo’s abilities was clearly not misplaced. Ironically, they were also the next directors to take over The Avengers franchise from none other than Joss Whedon.

Whilst the circumstances surrounding
Justice League
are very rare, Warner Bros. did allow Whedon to change Snyder’s film from what was already approved by the studio in development. Fans knew what to expect from Snyder’s style from
Man of Steel
and
Batman v Superman,
but when Whedon came on with his own style from
The Avengers,
what was created was essentially a muddled mix of two visions. Now, Warner Bros. are atoning by
allowing Snyder’s singular vision
to finally come to the screen.
As Joe Russo commented, a director works very hard for their vision to be realized and it’s nice to see that Snyder has the support of his peers in completing his film. Whether Snyder’s version will be any better than Whedon’s
Justice League
is yet to be seen, but
will be revealed when the Snyder cut launches
on HBO Max in 2021.
