Just like frizzy hair, static hair happens to the best of us. As the mornings become colder, static hair becomes more common, and if you’re anything like us, you want to know how to get rid of it, ASAP. According to hair care brand REDKEN, the reason for static hair is static electricity, which occurs when two objects rub against each other.
Using hat hair as example, REDKEN states, “When the material of your hat rubs against the strands of your hair, they swap electrons. This swap causes a kind of electric charge to build up on your hair.” In summer months, there is usually more moisture in your hair, meaning the static goes away itself. But in winter, when hair is drier, the static is stronger, meaning you may need to remove it yourself.

Moisturized hair is the key to preventing static
If you’re doing this and still experiencing static, Heidorn recommends using a leave-in conditioner or hair oil. “The moisture in the product will eliminate the electric charge that causes static, and that moisture and oil will allow your hair to become manageable again,” he explained.
Other quick fixes include using micro-fiber towels instead of terry cloth after showering, and investing in anti-frizz sheets and heat protection spray. As plastic brushes are also known to cause static, Heidorn recommends investing in natural boar bristle brushes and wooden or metal combs. However, it is important to note that metal combs can be harsh on hair and lead to breakage, so it’s best to use them sparingly.
