Yesterday, in an interview with
The Daily Beast
, Hugh Jackman expressed that he was at peace with not returning to the role of Wolverine and seeing another actor take his place.
In the same interview, Jackman also expressed that he would have played Wolverine in the MCU if the merger had occured occurred.
I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character… Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to. It’s kind of like, you’re on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, ‘Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back?’ And you say, Sounds good but…no. They’re fine with someone else.

WHAT THIS MEANS
Seven years ago would have been 2013, when
Iron Man 3
and
Thor: The Dark World
were released. There is no telling how the Infinity Saga would have been changed with the introduction of the X-Men and the inclusion of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Would they have been from another reality? Whatever the context of their inclusion, fans could have seen Jackman’s Wolverine butting heads with the likes of Captain America and Iron Man - and maybe even the long-anticipated fight between Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jackman’s Wolverine.
Totally. Honestly, Marlow, if seven years ago that had happened I’d be like, “Oh yeah!” but I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character.
However, these new comments from Jackman seem to be him doubling down on the fact that he will not return as the character. Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, it is highly unlikely that Jackman will ever return as Logan, even as a cameo. However, this doesn’t mean he isn’t open to appearing in the MCU as a different character.
In an interview with MTV
,
he expressed the possibility of appearing in the MCU as a new character, as long as he felt it was appropriate.
So, while fans will never see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the MCU, it doesn’t mean they won’t ever see Hugh Jackman at all.
Oh yeah, I’d be open to that. Yeah, for sure. I mean, for me I never saw it as a superhero, even when I got Logan and I didn’t know much about the X-Men series or comic book series, I was like ’these are great characters.’ All of these people are flawed characters. Sure they have extraordinary abilities, right, but they are all really flawed, and that’s what the movie’s about. That’s why people relate to it.
