About three years ago,
Marvel Studios’ most ambitious adventure at the time
was set, in 2018’s
Avengers: Infinity War
. The first part of the MCU’s Infinity Saga culmination found a way to bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy, taking on the Mad Titan Thanos as he hunted for the six Infinity Stones.
Due to this movie being
a crossover event unlike any ever seen before
, it was an “all hands on deck” endeavor for Marvel Studios and its top names. Specifically, working the Guardians of the Galaxy into the fold was part of the plot that took years of build-up, which led Marvel Studios to bring in director James Gunn to make sure their arrival landed smoothly.

In that light, Gunn spoke on his experience with the MCU’s Phase 3 climax, giving his favorite scene in the process.
JAMES GUNN TALKS GAMORA’S DEATH
Avengers: Infinity War
In a recent Twitter interaction,
Guardians of the Galaxy
director James Gunn was asked if Gamora’s death in
Avengers: Infinity War
was completely within his control.
Did you always plan for Gamora to die at the hands of Thanos or was that outside of your control?
While Gunn reveals that the scene
“wasn’t completely out of (his) control,”
he does say that it’s
“probably”
his favorite scene of the movie.

I definitely didn’t always plan on it - that’s why she isn’t on my list. But I was consulted before it was set in stone, so it wasn’t completely out of my control either. It’s probably my favorite scene in Infinity War. https://t.co/FoI9jrFjjf
I’M SORRY, LITTLE ONE…
Gamora’s death in
Avengers: Infinity War
was not only one of the turning points of the movie, but in the MCU as a whole. Thanos already had half of the Infinity Stones in his possession when he learned of the sacrifice required for the Soul Stone, and
he barely hesitated in throwing his own “adopted” daughter off a cliff
to her death.
With Zoe Saldana’s character being such an integral part of James Gunn’s franchise, it seems only right that he was consulted when directors Joe and Anthony Russo brought Gamora to her doom. The moment is one of the most memorable in MCU history, and it clearly hits Gunn the same way emotionally as it does for so many fans of the movie.

The big question now is this: how will Gamora’s journey continue in
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3
? The 2014 version of Gamora is somewhere in the galaxy after the events of
Avengers: Endgame
, and
after her teammates join Chris Hemsworth in 2022’s
Thor: Love and Thunder
, part of their next adventure will include searching the universe for their companion.
