from the latest issue of Empire Magazine. It was revealed that Task Force X will embark on an
“entirely new, sentence-reducing suicide mission.”
While sitting down with Empire,
The Suicide Squad
producer Peter Safran shared that the team has to destroy a
“Nazi-era prison”
called Jotunheim:

There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place.
WHAT THIS MEANS
Based on this reveal, it’s clear that Task Force X’s new mission will be a unique adventure. The R-rated nature of
The Suicide Squad
was
previously teased
by Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman, and it looks like the dangerous setting could heavily influence that aspect. This is on top of
Flula Borg’s remark
about massive explosions from the film, seemingly hinting that the Nazi-era prison is heavily guarded and unwelcoming to outsiders.
It remains to be seen what brings the team to Corto Maltese, but it’s likely that Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is up to no good once again, potentially sending Task Force X to retrieve another mysterious asset. During 2016’s
Suicide Squad
, it was revealed that the person that the team is trying to save was Waller herself, and it’s safe to say that it is unlikely that Gunn will repeat that plot point again.
It will be interesting to know what type of asset, may it be another person or artifact, that the team is trying to save this time around. Additionally, it is unknown if naming the prison as Jotunheim serves as a reference to the MCU’s
Thor
franchise, but this callback wouldn’t be surprising since Gunn is a huge part of the Marvel franchise. To recap, Jotunheim is the
home planet
of the Frost Giants, and part of the Nine Realms.
