When
Marvel Studios dropped their Phase 4 release slate at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con
, many fans were surprised to see yet another Thor movie on the lineup. After all, the
Iron Man
and
Captain America
franchises wrapped at three movies a piece, and both trilogies were much more financially profitable than the God of Thunder’s.
Regardless, Thor’s latest fun-loving and goofy persona has been a smash-hit with fans, and considering he was one of the only original six to leave
Endgame
still in one piece, it made sense that Marvel Studios would want to explore the Asgardian’s mythos further. Still, fans had their doubts. Would this fourth installment feel forced, or would it actually take The Mighty One through a story worth telling?

As if the title wasn’t telling enough,
Thor: Love and Thunder
is set to get even wilder than it’s predecessor
.
As reported by Deadline,
director
Taika Waititi and Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson spoke on Instagram Live about
Love and Thunder’s
script, claiming the sequel is going to raise the stakes in terms of the other-wordly nature established in
Ragnarok.
The New Zealand director went on to comment on the sequel’s script, saying it was on the “fourth or fifth” draft. Waititi also provided this comment about the film’s development process:
“It’s like 10-year-olds told us what should be in a movie and we said yes to every single thing.”
WHAT THIS MEANS
Taika Waititi is one of the most sought-after directors working in Hollywood today due to his unapologetically unique style. Due to his proven financial and critical successes with
Ragnarok
and last year’s Oscar-winning
Jojo Rabbit,
Waititi is clearly trusted to run wild with his creative visions. This Instagram Live only emphasizes that his creative freedom with Marvel is not going anywhere.
It was previously announced that
Love and Thunder
will see the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster in a much more “mightier” light
, but Waititi was not shy to confirm further details about the sequel on Instagram Live. He mentioned
Thor 4
would see the debut of the Starsharks
, as well as potentially an exploration into Korg’s species.

Aside from character details, Waititi did mention that the film’s script was on its “fourth or fifth draft.” While it may seem expected, the fact that Waititi is going through numerous drafts in order ensure the best script possible should heighten anticipation. Waititi clearly is very passionate about these characters and wants to deliver a story that not only reaches the high MCU bar, but raises it.
Combined with confirmation that
Ragnarok’s
costume designer would return for the fourth installment,
Waititi’s comments only further establish that
Love and Thunder
will expand upon
Ragnarok’s
tone
,
but likely will take it a lot further.
Thor: Love and Thunder
is set to hit theatres on its new release date of February 28, 2022.
