Cobb Vanth’s podracer-esque speeder

creatures seen in

has been a masterclass in how to balance new storytelling with fan service. But Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni aren’t limiting themselves to referencing Star Wars canon strictly loved by fans.

In the Season 2 premiere titled “Chapter 9: The Marshal,” small creatures known as Scurriers were seen when Mando first arrived at Mos Pelgo.
The Mandalorian
These desert creatures are native to Tatooine and were first introduced in
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Special Edition that first debuted in 1997.

The somewhat “infamous” Special Editions introduced new special effects and short computer-animated scenes, including footage of these Scurriers, to the original
Star Wars
. This was also the introduction of altered scenes, including Han and Greedo’s cantina standoff resulting in the well-known “Han shot first” controversy.

The Scurrier creatures then made an appearance in
Attack of the Clones
and later in
Star Wars Battlefront II
before reappearing now in
The Mandalorian
.
WHAT THIS MEANS
For years, fans have lamented how disjointed the Skywalker Saga both looks and feels. Now, with
The Mandalorian
including creatures and elements from various mediums and time periods in the Star Wars Universe, Star Wars lore is becoming a little more united and cohesive in live-action.
