Few details are known about
Loki
, which is set to hit Disney+ early next year. The show’s lead creatives did have some interesting notes about the genre and tone that they were aiming for. Showrunner Michael Waldron and director Kate Herron
both teased that the Disney+ series
would play heavily into science-fiction elements, telling fans to "
expect the unexpected.
" Simultaneously,
Herron also stated
that the series would feel "
very intimate,
" focusing on the characters and emotions of the show.
After its filming was halted earlier this year,
Loki'
s production status was left relatively uncertain. Various Marvel productions are now looking to get back on track as soon as possible, with
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
and
Loki
aiming to possibly
return to filming this August

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is one of the few stars attached to the project at this time, joining the likes of Tom Hiddleston in the lead role and Owen Wilson as
some sort of associate with the Time Variance Authority

NEWS
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight
, Gugu Mbatha-Raw spoke about her involvement with the
Loki
series so far. She also honed in on the titular character himself, speaking about how Loki would be handled in the series:
“
It goes to other places
and you get to see [Loki]
mature in a different way
…It’s going to be exciting for the fans to really see Tom and that character take the center of the story.”
Mbatha-Raw praised the fact that the series is being helmed by director Kate Herron as well, saying that her involvement was an “added bonus" following Mbatha-Raw appearing in two female-fronted series prior to her appearances in
Loki

“
Kate’s obviously earned her stripes to be in that production
…More than anything I was excited that it was being directed by one director…To be a part of a limited series [that’s] not just like episodic television, where you have a different director every week,
Kate really was going to direct all of the episodes
, which I’ve never had that experience on TV. I know it’s obviously been done, but personally I’ve not had the experience of doing several episodes with the same director.”
Finally, regarding Loki’s production status, Mbatha-Raw noted that she was excited to get back to filming:
“
It’s all still being figured out at the moment
, but fingers crossed…I can’t wait…
I’m excited to get back to work
.”
WHAT THIS MEANS
Loki’s maturity and allegiance has fluctuated throughout his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character has shifted from villain to anti-hero and back again, so audiences may be in for another positive redemption arc for Loki in his Disney+ series. The fact that Loki is said to be maturing in a different way, however, may indicate that there is something larger at play for the character.
Mbatha Raw’s remarks could be referring to the rumors that a female version of Loki will appear in the series.
It was reported late last year
that Sophia Di Martino may have been cast as a female incarnation of Loki. Loki has also been known to switch genders and sexualities in the comics, so this could be the "
different
" type of maturing that Mbatha-Raw is referring to.

Mbatha-Raw also notes how the series will see Herron directing all of the series’ episodes, indicating that
Loki
will have a singular vision throughout its initial run. This is similar to the approach of other Disney+ series, such as Deborah Chow directing the whole of the
Obi-Wan Kenobi
series.
Audiences will have to wait to see whether a female Loki will appear when the series releases on Disney+ in 2021.
